You are still functioning, still producing and, in many cases, still performing at a very high level.
Yet underneath that performance, something has changed.

You arrive home physically present but mentally still at work. You wake at 3am already thinking about tomorrow. Small problems feel disproportionately irritating. The difficulty arises when activation stops being something we move through and starts becoming the background state from which we live.
The meeting ends, but your body remains in the meeting.
The deadline passes, but your breathing remains shallow.
The difficult conversation is over, but your jaw is still clenched.
You are lying in bed at home, but some part of your system is behaving as though there is still a problem requiring immediate attention.
This is one useful way of thinking about nervous system regulation: the capacity to move flexibly between different states of activation and to return, when circumstances allow, to a state that is appropriate for the present moment.
The goal is not permanent calm.
The goal is flexibility.

Why intelligent people cannot simply think their way out of stress
One of the more frustrating experiences for intelligent and psychologically minded people is discovering that insight has limits.
You can understand exactly why you are anxious and remain anxious.
You can know intellectually that a presentation is not dangerous while your heart is racing as though something significant is at stake.
You can recognise that your partner is frustrated rather than attacking you while your body is already preparing to defend itself.
You can know that the workday is finished and still feel incapable of switching off.
This is not a failure of intelligence.
It reflects the fact that stress is not solely a cognitive event.
It is embodied.
Stress changes muscle tension, breathing, heart rate, posture, attention, movement, perception and the way we interpret what is happening around us. By the time we consciously decide that we would like to “relax”, our physiology may already be several steps ahead.
This is why purely cognitive advice can sometimes feel almost insulting when someone is highly activated.
“Stop thinking about it.”
“Try to relax.”
“Don’t worry.”
“Just switch off.”
All of those instructions assume that the part of the brain receiving the advice is completely in charge.
Often, it is not.
For many people, a more useful question is not simply:
“What am I thinking?”
but also:
“What is happening in my body right now, and what might help my system respond differently?”

The hidden cost of high performance
High-performing people are often particularly good at overriding internal signals.
You can be tired and keep working.
You can be anxious and still deliver the presentation.
You can feel emotionally depleted and still chair the meeting.
You can be carrying considerable personal stress and still answer the phone professionally five minutes later.
That capacity is valuable.
It can also become expensive.
Because the ability to override the body is not the same as the ability to regulate it.
In many high-performing environments, the body gradually becomes something to manage around rather than something to listen to.

The person remains productive, sometimes for years, while becoming progressively less connected to the signals that tell them what the system is actually carrying.

Perhaps the quality of your decisions changes because everything feels urgent.

What people mean when they talk about a “nervous system reset”
“Nervous system reset” has become a popular search term, and I understand why.
It captures the feeling many people have that their system needs to stop, recalibrate and begin again.
Biologically, however, the nervous system does not have a literal reset button.
A more accurate way to think about a nervous system reset is as a shift in state.
The aim is to become better at noticing when your body is mobilising, overwhelmed, flat or disconnected, and to develop practical ways of influencing that state rather than simply being carried by it.
Over time, the skill is not becoming permanently regulated.
It is becoming increasingly familiar with the process of returning.
You notice sooner.
You intervene earlier.
You recover more effectively.
And, because you recover more effectively, you retain more choice in what happens next.
Why I created Soma Circuit
Soma Circuit began in a very ordinary way.
For years, in my work as a clinical psychologist and executive coach, I would record short guided nervous system practices for clients to use between sessions.
The reason was simple.
A therapy or coaching session might create insight, perspective or clarity, but real life happens during the rest of the week.
It happens ten minutes before the board meeting.
It happens after the argument with your partner.
It happens when you have finished work but cannot stop thinking about work.
It happens at 3am.
It happens when your child needs your attention and your mind is still replaying a difficult conversation from four hours earlier.
It happens when you know you need to slow down but your body appears to have forgotten how.
Clients used the recordings.
Then they asked for more.
Over time, a repeated question emerged: could these practices exist in one place, in a form that was easy enough to use when someone was already stressed?
That question became Soma Circuit.

Overwhelmed
You may feel:

This is the state many people associate with stress.
Your system has mobilised energy and may be finding it difficult to settle again.
In this state, Soma Circuit may guide you towards practices involving grounding, orienting, muscular release, slower breathing or other approaches designed to help reduce unnecessary activation.
The objective is not to make you passive.
It is to help your system move from too much activation towards a level at which you can think and respond more clearly.
Steady

This is often treated as the state in which nothing needs to happen.
But from a training perspective, it is enormously valuable.
When your nervous system is relatively steady, you have the opportunity to practise without already being overwhelmed. In much the same way that physical fitness is built before you need it, regulation capacity can be strengthened before the difficult meeting, conflict or period of sustained pressure arrives.
Practices in this state may include rhythmic breathing, body awareness, resourcing, visualisation and exercises designed to increase your ability to stay connected to yourself while experiencing increasing levels of activation.
Flat
You may feel:
tired · numb · disconnected · heavy · shut down
This state is frequently misunderstood.
When someone is flat, the answer is not always more relaxation.
Sometimes the system requires gentle mobilisation.
For this reason, Soma Circuit includes practices involving movement, breath, sound and attention to energising or pleasant sensations in the body.
The principle is straightforward:
Start with the state you are actually in, rather than the state you believe you should be in.
The commercial case for nervous system regulation
It is easy to position nervous system regulation as a wellness practice.
For business people, I think that undersells it.
Your physiological state affects how you interpret information.
It affects whether ambiguity feels manageable or threatening.
It affects how quickly you react.
It affects how much cognitive bandwidth is available to consider competing perspectives.

A chronically activated leader may believe they are being decisive when the people around them experience them as impatient.
A depleted leader may interpret their loss of energy as a motivation problem.

One of the reasons I wanted Soma Circuit to remain simple is that most busy people do not need another elaborate wellbeing system.
Another 30-minute morning routine.
Another course.
Another dashboard.
Another commitment to optimise.
Another habit that becomes evidence of failure when the week gets busy.
The irony is obvious: a tool designed to reduce stress should not become another source of pressure.

The period immediately after receiving an upsetting email.
The moment you notice yourself escalating during an argument.
The point at which your workday has technically finished but your nervous system has not.
These moments matter because state carries over.
You may leave the office, but your physiology comes with you.
And unless there is some kind of transition, the stress of one environment is easily imported into the next.
Work pressure becomes family irritability.
A difficult conversation becomes lost sleep.
A demanding week becomes a weekend spent numbing rather than recovering.
Over time, one of the most useful nervous system skills is learning to recognise:
“That part of my day has ended. I do not need to carry its physiology into the next one.”

It is valuable because state influences behaviour.
The more regulated you are, the greater the likelihood that your response reflects your values rather than the intensity of the moment.
That might mean holding a boundary without becoming aggressive.
Listening instead of preparing your defence.
Allowing a difficult email to sit for 20 minutes before replying.
Leaving the office without mentally taking the office home.
Recognising fatigue before turning it into resentment.
Or remaining present with the people you care about when another part of you wants to disappear back into work.
That space between impulse and action is small.
It is also where much of adult life is determined.
Nervous system regulation and burnout
Burnout is often discussed as though it is simply a question of workload.
Sometimes it is.
But workload alone does not explain why two people facing similar demands can have very different experiences, nor why someone can reduce their hours yet remain physiologically unable to recover.
One part of the picture is the nervous system's relationship with pressure.
Some people are highly effective at activation and comparatively poor at deactivation.
They know how to accelerate.
They do not know how to brake.
They can mobilise extraordinary energy when there is a challenge in front of them, but when the challenge ends, the body does not fully register that the demand is over.
This creates a dangerous illusion.
Because the person remains capable, they assume everything is fine.
Until the cost appears as chronic exhaustion, sleep disturbance, irritability, emotional flatness, loss of enjoyment, physical tension or an increasing sense that every demand — even a small one — is becoming harder to absorb.
Building nervous system regulation skills for stress and burnout is therefore not about becoming less ambitious.
It is about increasing the range within which ambition remains sustainable.
The question is not:
“How do I remove pressure from my life?”
For many business owners, executives and professionals, that would be unrealistic.
The better question is:
“How do I build a nervous system capable of meeting the life I have chosen without sacrificing the parts of that life that matter most?”
That is a very different goal.
Success is not much use if you cannot inhabit it
There is a paradox I have seen repeatedly in high-performing people.
They work extremely hard to create freedom, security, influence and opportunity.
Then the physiology required to build that life makes it increasingly difficult to enjoy the life they have created.
They get the promotion and immediately think about the next one.
They build the business and cannot stop working.
They take the holiday and spend the first four days coming down.
They sit at dinner with people they love while mentally solving tomorrow's problems.
They achieve objectively meaningful things yet rarely experience the feeling of having arrived anywhere.
This is one reason the phrase “Find your way back” sits at the heart of Soma Circuit.
